What the heat strips already cost you in January

Open the Ocala Electric Utility bill for January, or Duke’s or SECO’s if you’re outside the city. Compare it to October. The gap is the heat strips in your air handler, which run on the freezing mornings and cost several times what the heat pump does per degree. That gap, divided over seventeen or so cold nights, is what heat costs in this county.

Now imagine adding an uninsulated 500-square-foot room with a steel door to that load. That’s a garage. For most Ocala homeowners, the honest answer is a space heater by the workbench and a sweatshirt.

For a few, the garage is where the work happens, and the numbers change.

The Marion County garages that earn a heater

  • Woodworkers and finishers. Varnish, epoxy and glue have minimum cure temperatures. Below about 55 degrees, the project stops. In Ocala, that’s a dozen mornings a year, often in a row.
  • Farm and equestrian shops. The acreage along the US 441 corridor and out toward the World Equestrian Center has detached metal buildings where tack is repaired, tractors are serviced and feed is stored. A frozen fitting or a cold-stiff hydraulic line on a 25-degree morning is a cost.
  • Home mechanics. Marion Oaks and Silver Springs Shores garages host a lot of weekend car work.
  • Anyone with a garage-mounted water heater or softener on a private well, which describes a lot of unincorporated Marion County.

Heating an existing garage versus speccing a new one

Retrofitting an existing garage means a wall- or ceiling-mounted unit heater, electric or vented propane, on its own circuit or gas line. It installs in a morning. The limitation is the building: an uninsulated block garage with a single-pane window and a hollow steel door bleeds heat as fast as any heater makes it. Insulating the door and sealing the slab edge often does more than the next size up in heater.

New construction in SW Ocala and the horse-country subdivisions gives you a chance to spec the garage properly: insulated walls and door, a dedicated circuit roughed in, and a condensate drain stub if you ever want to cool it too. Ask the builder for the circuit even if you don’t buy the heater yet. It’s cheap during framing and annoying afterward.

What ductwork can and can’t do

Ocala’s typical house has an attic air handler and flex duct. Tapping a garage supply off that system is tempting and wrong. The garage holds car exhaust and gasoline vapor, it isn’t air-sealed from outside, and in summer it’s the hottest room on the property. A duct to it pulls that air back into the house through any return leak and dumps conditioned air into a space that can’t hold it. Inspectors fail it for good reason.

If you want a garage that’s comfortable year-round, which in Ocala means cooled in August far more than heated in January, the right tool is a ductless mini-split sized for the space. It heats on the cold mornings and dehumidifies all summer, which protects tools and stored belongings from rust and mildew.

How big a heater a 28-degree morning needs

A heater is sized by the building’s heat loss, not its square footage alone. Insulation, door type, ceiling height, slab exposure and how warm you want it all go into the number. For a workshop you want at 60 degrees on a 28-degree morning, the load is modest. For a barn apartment you want at 70, it’s a different appliance. We measure and quote; we don’t guess from the square footage over the phone, and the quote is free.

Garage and workshop heating in Marion County

My Marion Oaks garage is now my shop. What's the cheapest way to take the chill off?

For a two-car attached garage used a few mornings a winter, an electric unit heater on its own circuit is the lowest-cost install. It costs real money per hour to run, so you switch it on when you walk in, not on a schedule.

Can you heat and cool the garage with the house system?

We advise against it. Garages are unconditioned by code for good reasons: fumes, humidity and heat load. A ducted tie-in is usually a code problem and always an efficiency one. A dedicated mini-split is the right way to condition a garage year-round.

Propane or electric for a detached barn shop?

If propane is already on the property for the house or a generator, a vented LP unit heater gives the most heat per dollar on a 25-degree morning. If it isn’t, electric avoids a tank contract for a handful of uses a year.

Will a heater in the garage help the water heater or softener out there?

A little, and that’s a legitimate reason some well-water households in Oak Run and Ocala Palms ask. Pipe insulation and a drip on freeze nights are cheaper insurance; the heater is a bonus.
