The January line on the bill

Here is the problem a furnace solves in Ocala, in plain dollars-and-months terms.

Most houses in Marion County are all-electric or use LP. They heat with a heat pump, and on the handful of nights each winter when the outdoor temperature drops into the twenties, the heat pump hands the job to a bank of electric resistance strips in the air handler. Strips heat the house fine. They do it at roughly two to three times the cost per hour of the heat pump, because they make heat from electricity instead of moving it.

In an average year Ocala sees its first 32-degree night around December 12, its coldest January nights settle in the upper twenties, and the record low is 11. That is maybe fifteen to twenty nights of strip heat. On a well-insulated 2010s house in Ocala Preserve with a correctly set thermostat, that’s a modest bump on the January Ocala Electric Utility or Duke bill and nothing to fix.

On a 1970s block ranch in Silver Springs Shores with original attic duct, single-pane windows and a thermostat left on its factory auxiliary-heat setting, the strips may run every morning from Thanksgiving to March, and the January bill rivals July’s. That’s the house where the conversation about a furnace, or about fixing the heat pump and its settings, is worth having.

A gas or LP furnace produces the same heat for less on a cold week. Whether that saving over a six-week heating season justifies the equipment, the gas line and the venting is arithmetic, not opinion, and we do it at the estimate, which is free.

Seven questions to answer before anyone quotes a furnace

Work through these first. They decide whether a furnace is even the right page.

  1. Is there gas at the house? Peoples Gas runs an Ocala division serving the older in-town core and some newer developments. If a main is on your street, a furnace is a real option. If not, the choice is LP with a tank or no furnace at all.
  2. What’s heating the house now, and how old is it? A heat pump under twelve years old with a strip-heat bill problem usually needs a thermostat setting and a tune-up, not a furnace.
  3. What does the thermostat show on a cold morning? If it says AUX or EM HEAT at 45 degrees, the auxiliary heat is misconfigured. That’s a service call, and it’s cheaper than a furnace.
  4. Pull twelve months of electric bills. The shape of December through February against the rest of the year tells us how much strip heat you’re buying.
  5. Which rooms are cold? A cold back bedroom is a duct problem in most Ocala houses of the 1970s and 1980s. A furnace won’t fix a leaking duct.
  6. How long will you be in the house? A furnace pays back over winters. Fewer winters, less case.
  7. Is there a place for it? Furnaces need venting and combustion air. A garage, a utility room or a closet with a path for PVC vent to the outside. Attic installs are possible and harder.

The point where the checklist hands off to a technician

Stop and call when: there’s gas on the street and the heat pump is past fifteen years, so a dual-fuel pairing can be designed from scratch; you already have a gas or LP furnace that’s past twenty years or has failed a heat exchanger inspection; you’re building or gutting a house in the Historic District, Golden Ocala or the Equestrian Corridor and the equipment decision is open; or the winter electric bills say strip heat is carrying the house and the heat pump is too old to be worth fixing.

Also stop if the furnace is dead right now and it’s freezing. We install around the clock, the estimate still comes first, and there’s no after-hours charge.

How a Cook’s furnace install goes, gas or electric

A furnace installation in Ocala runs the same way whether it’s a replacement in a Southeast Ocala hall closet or an LP unit in a barn office off US 441.

  • Site visit and load calculation. The house is measured, not the old furnace. An oversized furnace short-cycles, wears its ignitor and never evens out the rooms.
  • Fuel and venting plan. Gas pressure confirmed at the meter, or LP tank and regulator sized; vent routing designed to code with the right slope and termination; combustion air verified for the closet or room.
  • Duct evaluation. Return and supply checked against the new furnace’s airflow. In older attic-duct houses this is where we tell you the duct is the real problem, if it is.
  • Equipment. Lennox, matched to the existing or new cooling coil. For dual-fuel, the heat pump and furnace are paired and the thermostat is set to switch between them at the outdoor temperature where gas becomes cheaper than the heat pump.
  • Removal. Old furnace disconnected, gas line capped and tested, equipment hauled away.
  • Installation. New furnace set and leveled, gas connection leak-tested, venting run and sealed, condensate drain for high-efficiency models, electrical and thermostat wiring completed, surge protection at the disconnect in a lightning capital.
  • Startup. Gas pressure set, temperature rise measured against the data plate, combustion analyzed in the flue, carbon monoxide confirmed at zero in the living space, three full cycles from cold, and the thermostat programmed for Ocala’s winter.
  • Paperwork. Equipment registered for the full parts warranty. Permits and inspection where the county or city requires them are itemized on the quote. Financing with low monthly payments is available on new systems. Ask for the labor warranty terms on a Cook’s install. [[CONFIRM WITH JERRY]]

After the install: the first winter and the next ten

A new furnace in Ocala will run about six weeks a year and sit for forty-six. That idle time is what shortens its life, so the aftercare is simple and specific.

Book a fall inspection every October, before the first freeze. That hour is when a weak ignitor, a dirty flame sensor or a clogged burner port gets found on a warm afternoon instead of a 28-degree morning. Change the filter monthly from January through May, when oak and pine pollen load Marion County filters faster than any box recommends. On a dual-fuel system, leave the changeover temperature where it was set; moving it to “always gas” or “always heat pump” undoes the arithmetic that justified the install.

And keep the carbon monoxide detector current. A gas furnace in a Florida house is safe when it’s inspected and unsafe when it’s forgotten, and the forgetting is easy when the heat only runs in December.

Furnace installation questions from Marion County

Do you put in furnaces only, or heat pumps too?

Both, and in Ocala the honest first question is which one you need. Cook’s installs Lennox heat pumps, gas and LP furnaces, and dual-fuel pairings of the two. If a furnace isn’t the right answer for your house, we’ll say so before quoting one.

Will a new furnace cut what I pay Peoples Gas or Duke?

Replacing a twenty-year-old gas furnace with a current high-efficiency model cuts gas use for the same heat, and the difference shows on the Peoples Gas bill in the cold months. Adding a furnace to an all-electric house moves the January heating cost from the electric bill to the gas bill; whether the total goes down depends on the strips it replaces and the price of gas, and we’ll run that for your house rather than promise it.

Any rebate or credit for a furnace in Marion County?

The federal 25C tax credit for high-efficiency furnaces ended for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025. Utility rebates in this area focus on electric equipment: Ocala Electric Utility, Duke and Clay Electric all reward heat pumps, not gas furnaces. Ask us about current manufacturer incentives instead; Peoples Gas incentives, if any apply to your address, are something to check with the utility. [[CONFIRM WITH JERRY]]

Will I still hear the furnace from the bedroom?

Far less than an older unit. A current two-stage or variable-capacity furnace spends most of its time at low fire with the blower on low, and the ignition sequence is a quiet click rather than a roar. If the old furnace shared a wall with a bedroom, we’ll also look at whether the closet or return needs lining.
