The myth that inland Ocala is easy on an air conditioner
No salt air, no coast, so the air conditioner should last longer here. That's what we hear in Ocala, and the July thermometer disagrees.

The belief, and what the July thermometer says about it
Ocala sits eighty-some miles from either coast, and a lot of homeowners here assume that distance is a gift to their equipment. No salt spray eating the condenser coil, no sea breeze pushing moisture through the walls. It sounds right. It isn’t.
July in Ocala averages a 90-degree high and a 72-degree dew point. The hot season, when highs run above 86, stretches from early May into the last days of September. There is no afternoon sea breeze to knock the temperature down at four o’clock; the heat simply sits over the city until the storms arrive. An air conditioner here runs longer cycles and more of them than the same machine would at the beach, and it does it from March through November.
Then add what the coast doesn’t have. Oak and pine pollen loads outdoor coils from February to May. Florida leads the nation in lightning density, and the summer storm pattern over Marion County pops capacitors and control boards every afternoon it fires. Roughly forty percent of the housing stock predates 1980, which means forty percent of the attic ductwork is at least forty-five years old. Inland is not easy. Inland is a different kind of hard.
This page is the front door to everything Cook’s does for cooling in Ocala. The three pages behind it, repair, maintenance and installation, go deeper. Start here if you don’t know which one you need.
A decision tree for the system you already have
Most calls begin with one question: fix it or replace it? Here is how we work through it, in the order we ask.
- How old is it? The nameplate on the outdoor unit has a manufacture date in the serial number. Under ten years, repair almost always wins. Past fifteen, keep reading.
- What refrigerant does it use? R-410A systems are repairable at reasonable cost. R-22 systems, common in anything installed before about 2010, are repairable until the leak is in the coil, at which point the refrigerant bill alone can approach the cost of serious equipment.
- Is the failure electrical or mechanical? A capacitor, a contactor, a float switch or a blower motor is a repair at any age. A compressor or an evaporator coil on an older system opens the replacement conversation.
- Does the house have other problems the equipment is covering for? A 1979 block ranch in Silver Springs Shores with original flex duct in a 130-degree attic may be losing a quarter of its cooling before the air reaches a room. Fixing the duct sometimes matters more than the box outside.
- What is your horizon? Selling the house in two years changes the answer. So does staying in it for twenty.

If the repair is small and the system is young, we fix it and go. If the repair is large and the system is past fifteen, we quote both options with real numbers and tell you which one we’d pick for our own house. Nobody gets pushed either direction.
Lennox on the new side, every nameplate on the repair side
Cook’s is a Lennox dealer. New installations in Ocala are Lennox equipment, including the Healthy Climate and Ultimate Comfort System lines, and we are certified to install systems designed to work with rooftop solar, which matters in a county with as much open sky as this one.
Repair is a different matter. The system that came with your house is whatever the builder or the last owner chose, and we work on all of it: Lennox, Carrier, Bryant, Trane and the rest of the brands you’ll find on condensers around Fore Ranch, Heath Brook and the 55+ communities along SR 200. Package units on the roofs of older villas, straight-cool systems with electric heat strips, heat pumps, ductless mini-splits in converted garages and Florida rooms: if it has a nameplate, we carry gauges for it.
Warranty fine print worth knowing before you call anyone
Three things trip up Ocala homeowners on warranties, and none of them are obvious.
- Registration. Manufacturer parts warranties are usually longer when the equipment is registered within a window after installation. If you bought a house in Stone Creek or Ocala Preserve with a system someone else installed, find out whether it was registered. We can look it up from the serial number.
- Maintenance records. Most manufacturers can decline a warranty claim on a system with no service history. Two documented visits a year is the standard that keeps you covered.
- Parts versus labor. A parts warranty covers the part. The labor to replace it is a separate question, and ask for the terms Cook’s offers on labor for its own installations. [[CONFIRM WITH JERRY]]
On repairs, the parts we install carry their manufacturer’s warranty, and our satisfaction guarantee covers the work itself.
Paying for it, and the rebates that change the math
A replacement is a real expense, and we don’t pretend otherwise. Financing with low monthly payments is available on new high-efficiency systems, and estimates for replacements are free. Lender and terms come with the quote, not on this page.
What’s specific to Ocala is the utility side. Inside the city limits, Ocala Electric Utility serves about 56,000 customers and runs a residential rebate program that most people have never heard of. It pays toward HVAC repairs such as coil cleaning, refrigerant leak repair and duct leak repair when a licensed contractor’s receipt is submitted, and it offers a rebate on ENERGY STAR air conditioners and heat pumps that meet its efficiency thresholds. OEU also keeps a list of pre-qualified contractors for certain rebates; ask where Cook’s stands on that list. [[CONFIRM WITH JERRY]] Outside the city, Duke Energy Florida, SECO Energy and Clay Electric split unincorporated Marion County, and Duke and Clay each run their own replacement incentives after an energy survey.
The federal tax credits that used to apply to high-efficiency equipment ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. We won’t tell you otherwise. Ask about current utility and manufacturer incentives instead; those are real, and we’ll help you file.
What first-time Ocala callers ask us
How long has Cook's been doing this, and why is there no year on the website?
Decades, as a family-owned company, and we don’t print a founding year and we would rather not print a guess. Ask Jerry on the phone and he’ll tell you the story. [[CONFIRM WITH JERRY]] What matters more is that the people who answer at 2 a.m. are the same people who answer at 2 p.m.
Can a new system be paid off monthly instead of all at once?
Yes. Financing with low monthly payments is available on new high-efficiency systems, and the estimate for a replacement is free. We don’t publish lender names or rates here because terms change; the technician brings the current paperwork to the quote visit.
Our business is in a strip center on SR 200. Is that work you take?
It is. Cook’s repairs, maintains and installs commercial systems, including rooftop package units over retail bays and the split systems in medical offices along the SR 200 corridor. Commercial accounts can be scheduled around your hours.
You're two hours away. Why call you instead of an Ocala-based outfit?
Because the drive is our problem, not yours. Dispatch runs out of Palm Coast around the clock, there is no after-hours charge, and a technician who has driven SR 40 across the forest to get to you is not in a hurry to leave before the job is right.
